Welcome to EMIT

EMIT stands for Expressive Music Intelligent Technology. It is a unique program designed to transform user ideas into musical notes. EMIT’s goal is to provide users with raw musical material for inspiration or complimentary parts in music production. EMIT gives us unrefined melody and harmony parts interpreted in a key and mood extracted from our text ideas. These parts are delivered as MIDI files, which can be imported into musical editing software for further refinement and processing.

I created EMIT because I love music and making music, but sometimes I need a spark of inspiration. Occasionally, I have an idea or an image in my mind and need help hearing what it might sound like as a sketch to build on. I wanted a way to quickly hear ideas and lower the productivity barrier. Leveraging AI focused on natural language processing and interpretation to transform written language into musical language seemed logical to me.

I also wanted a direct way to arrange pieces of music almost like building blocks or a puzzle. The MIDI format is perfect for this, as it can be cut and chopped like audio files, but individual notes in the file can also be edited directly with a MIDI editor or digital audio workspace.

The result is EMIT—an intuitive program focused on supporting user creativity rather than replacing it. Using EMIT is more like jamming with like-minded musicians instead of interacting with typical generative artificial intelligence. And at the end of the day, you get to decide what to do with EMIT’s outputs. You might chop it up, loop it, change the instruments, tempo, add layers of counter melody, drums, bass, etc. EMIT provides an open world with just the right amount of supportive inspiration.
